Nischal Adhikari is an Indian, who has also made his mark in the world of photography. He has photographed many of India's most intriguing people and places. He is currently working on a project called 'The Mountain Man' which features portraits of Dashrath Manjhi; an Indian hero, who single-handedly carved out a path through a mountain with just a hammer and chisel to connect two parts of his village that were cut off by the river for 22 years. Dasharath Manjhi was born on April 20th 1927 in Haryana district in Gaya district, India. His birthplace was Bidiya village. Bidiya village is located in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar, near Bodh Gaya. His parents name were Late Shri Sukhdeo Singh and Late Smt. De Dei. Heeding the advice of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, Manjhi single-handedly carved out a 360-foot long (110 metres) and 25-foot (7.6 metres) wide road through the mountainside. He used only hammer and chisel (thus named "Sisai", which means "hammer" in Hindi). After the completion of the road, Manjhi started working as a laborer to support his family. When he was 75 years old, he was paid a pension from the government of Bihar. In 2010, Manjhi's son carried out a survey that showed that his father had completed the road in 18 years, as opposed to customary time frames of 7-8 years. In 2005, Manjhi opened his own business – a stone cutting factory – with four workers and one assistant. He also started driving a tractor for his sons. His son's survey showed that it took him 15 years to make a mark on the mountain using only hammer and chisel. Manjhi was awarded the title of "The Mountain Man" by the Bihar state government. He is also remembered in the Guinness Book of World Records as being "the man who built a road through a mountain with just a hammer and chisel". In 2010 he was chosen as India's sole nominee for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Rural Water Supply and Sanitation. Manjhi has been honored by many awards from government and honorary from his native state, Bihar. Nischal Adhikari has made a documentary film about Manjhi called 'the man who built a road through a mountain with just a hammer and chisel'. About the film, Adhikari said: “The film will be an unprecedented profile of a man who has been associated with Gandhian values since childhood.” “I would like to make films as long as I live and as far as I can afford them,” says Adhikari, 38. Manjhi was awarded The President's Award for Rural Development and Water Supply and Sanitation for his contribution to Water Resource Management in 2010 and 2011 and Manjhi received the Swami Sahajanand Saraswati Samman Award in 2005.
